A jury ruled the deaths of 48 people in the Stardust nightclub fire as unlawful killing. The jury in the inquests into the 1981 blaze in Dublin delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The fire in the Stardust nightclub, owned by the Butterly group, in Artane on Valentine’s Day in 1981 is considered the worst fire disaster in Ireland’s history. Investigations showed that a number of escape routes from the dance hall were blocked because emergency doors were locked by chains. Despite findings of safety breaches, there were no prosecutions.
