"I'd also like to thank the nation for allowing us to have these 30 years to go use this shuttle system. This is a tremendous vehicle. As I said, as I stood out on the runway and stared at it, I looked at this winged vehicle and I thought about all the systems and when they were designed back in the 70s and it was a true marvel looking at that machine sitting on the runway, it's really allowed us to do amazing things and it's going to continue to allow us to do amazing things in the future."

"Out on the runway, I found myself, as I did with Discovery and Endeavour, just taking in the beauty of the vehicle. Standing back and taking pictures and taking pictures of the workers and them asking for a picture with me and it was just a family event out there today. Hard to describe the emotions. There were good emotions that we brought the crew home safely and the mission's complete. Certainly sadness that it's over."

STORYLINE
NASA chiefs said they had mixed emotions watching shuttle Atlantis and four astronauts return from the International Space Station in triumph on Thursday, ending the 30-year shuttle programme.
In a post landing news conference, Space Operations Manager Bill Gerstenmaier thanked the taxpayers for allowing NASA to venture into low Earth orbit with a beautiful machine.
Flight director Mike Leinbach said the tears flowed.
He himself was awash with emotion as he took in "the beauty of the vehicle," snapped pictures and posed for pictures at workers' requests, some of whom face layoffs.
"There were good emotions that we brought the crew home safely and the mission's complete. Certainly sadness that it's over," said Leinbach.
Atlantis was greeted with cheers, whistles and shouts from the record 2-thousand who had gathered near the runway, including astronauts' families and friends, as well as shuttle managers and NASA brass.
Within an hour, Commander Chris Ferguson and his crew were out on the runway and swarmed by well-wishers.
