Metroid Dread is the first brand new 2D Metroid in 20 years, and it has spent more than half of that time in development hell. In the meantime, the series has seen more than its fair share of disappointment. From Other M, to Federation Force, to having nothing more than a placeholder logo for Prime 4 after four years of waiting, it's been a rough time to be a Metroid fan.

Out of nowhere, Metroid Dread was announced for the Switch and then released mere months later. And against all odds, it's good. It's really, really good.

Perhaps most importantly, it accomplishes this without neglecting series veterans. Neither the difficulty nor the Metroid lore are watered down for new players. Sequence breaking is encouraged. Samus is badass. Metroid Dread is Metroid done right.
