Signed by India and China on April 29, 1954, the Panchsheel Agreement was supposed to be the bedrock of peaceful coexistence between the two countries.

Looking back, it’s an irony rooted in history based on the premise of trust and neighbourliness. It took less than a decade for that trust to be blown to pieces, when China attacked India in 1962. The unprovoked Chinese aggression against India has continued at intervals ever since.

In our limited series ‘Blast From The Past’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale reflects on the circumstances that led to signing of the agreement and how a lot of water has flown under the bridge when it comes to India-China relations.
