In editing this video I noticed that I glazed over a fair amount of the history of policy reform and failed to cover:
1. The expansion of education access made possible by things like the GI Bill which benefitted veterans
2. The vast importance of the Reagan Era in shaping student loan debt, rising tuition costs, and the policing of academic freedoms
3. Why I mention Blair in a video about the US 😅 The intent was to show that these policy efforts which combined the polytechnics and universities was not just a US phenomenon.
And so much more.
Initially this video also intended to cover what I call "institutional tolerance" in which the free speech and intellectual freedoms of students are either celebrated or policed. We see examples of this during the student antio-war protests during the War in Vietnam or the arrest of students in support of Palestine. I will cover this in a future video, however, because this is a topic which also needs addressing.
Here are some sources I referenced for this video but I am happy to continue reading, watching and educating myself.
