LUMBRAN is a long-standing experimental duo formed by Membran33 (Anthropolis Studio) and Bavarian musician and sound artist Lu Laumer. For more than 14 years, the project has explored the edges of abstract electronic music, ambient, and sound sculpture, focusing on process, texture, and collective interaction rather than traditional song forms.
Two performers, two signal paths, constantly interacting — responding, overlapping, interfering. The piece unfolds as a living system, shaped by real-time improvisation, micro-looping, and modular synthesis, where no sound exists in isolation.

The track is built using modular synthesizers, Buchla Easel, layered effects chains, loop machines, deep reverb spaces, and continuous modulation. Short fragments are captured, repeated, processed, and slowly transformed. Filters breathe, delays smear time, reverbs stretch space, and modulation creates subtle instabilities that keep the sound in motion.

Sonically, The Swarm evokes robotic insects, mechanical animals, and artificial organisms communicating through pulses and signals. Repetitive patterns collide and reorganize, forming dense, sometimes uneasy textures. Rhythmic elements emerge organically from looping processes rather than fixed grids, creating a sense of autonomous movement — a swarm intelligence made of sound.

This is not easy listening, but immersive listening. The pleasure lies in detail: in the shifting relationships between loops, the tension between repetition and variation, and the tactile quality of electronic sound shaped live. The composition sits between free electronic improvisation and electroacoustic composition, suitable as much for gallery spaces and sound installations as for focused headphone listening.

Released on Anthropolis Studio, The Swarm continues LUMBRAN’s exploration of electronic music as a material practice — sound as structure, behavior, and environment rather than narrative.
