Much-loved French Bulldog Mylo is affected by a subarachnoid diverticulum, which involves formation of a cyst within the outer membrane of the spinal cord, causing pressure, impairing nerve conduction and threatening paralysis. Sadly, this often occurs for genetic reasons.

With the cyst having returned after previous surgery and Mylo’s health in decline, Noel and the Fitzpatrick Referrals team explore a new possibility for Mylo. A bespoke surgical procedure is proposed to drain the cyst, reduce its chance of returning and hopefully prevent spiralling deterioration toward paralysis of his hind legs. The implant was developed by Noel and his engineering colleagues and is called a FUSS plate – Fitz Universal Spinal Stabilisation plate.

However, no operation is without risk and during the procedure, the ‘fuss’ becomes very real, as Mylo’s surgery becomes one of the tensest and technically complex challenges of any featured on Supervet ER. Noel and the team are pushed to their limits in a bid to build a better future for sweet-natured Mylo.
