Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis is a newly described theropod dinosaur found in the Hall Lake Formation of the New Mexican McRae Group. Not only did it belong to the same branch of Theropoda as Tyrannosaurus rex, Tyrannosauridae, but it also belong belonged to the same genus as the tyrant king. Furthermore, T. mcraeensis was about the same size as T. rex, making them roughly tied for the title of largest known carnivorous dinosaur.

Additionally, the discovery of Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis has lead paleontologist to reconsider the origins of Tyrannosaurus, suggesting the genus was much older than originally thought. It has also helped lead to the recognition of an entirely new paleoenvironment, one distinct from both those that were later terrorized by Tyrannosaurus rex as well as contemporary formations up north.
