Nio, a prominent name in the electric vehicle industry, has just introduced the first car under its new Firefly budget brand. This compact hatchback, called the Firefly Electric Vehicle, is expected to hit the Chinese market at a starting price of just over twenty thousand dollars. However, when it debuts in Europe, likely in the first half of 2025, its price is anticipated to rise due to tariffs and additional costs. Even with the price adjustment, Nio is confident the Firefly Electric Vehicle will remain competitive against established players like Smart and Mini.

At first glance, the Firefly Electric Vehicle carries a design aesthetic reminiscent of the Honda e, although it is slightly larger with a rounder silhouette. Its unique lighting design at the front and rear ensures it stands out in its own right. Unfortunately, Nio has kept the technical specifications under wraps for now, leaving us guessing about key details like whether the car is front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive. What we do know is that it will feature battery swapping technology, a hallmark of Nio’s innovative approach.

The Firefly Electric Vehicle also offers impressive practicality. With the rear seats folded, it boasts a maximum cargo space of forty-four point one cubic feet, along with a small front trunk measuring three point two four cubic feet.

To support this new venture in Europe, Nio plans to establish a network of Firefly-specific battery swapping stations. These stations are expected to be more cost-effective than those designed for the main Nio brand. Despite this, details about the vehicle’s battery capacity and driving range remain undisclosed.

Interestingly, Firefly will adopt a different sales strategy compared to Nio’s main brand. Rather than direct-to-consumer sales, Firefly vehicles will be sold through existing dealership networks, alongside other brands. The company also plans to offer the “battery as a service” model, allowing buyers to lease the battery and subscribe to access swapping stations. While this lowers the car’s initial cost, it introduces ongoing monthly payments, which European buyers have been slower to embrace compared to Chinese consumers.
