Today we will pose a rather simple question; where are all the earliest photographs of the architecture of Vienna? Incredibly, there is a rich history related to photography in Austria that dates the whole way back to 1839 and 1840.

In these years, shortly after photography was introduced to the public, a leading optics company in Vienna, named Voigtländer, was said to have perfected a camera which could capture photographs in record time, all using the mathematically advanced Petzval Lens. Yet, as all this history was unfolding in Vienna, the city was thoroughly impacted by the Revolution of 1848, which in return left much of the historical narrative, and city, in disarray.

Today, I’ve assembled for you the earliest, rarest, and most incredible photographs of Vienna dated to roughly 1860 through the year 1900, and yet in my search I was unable to find nearly any architectural photographs before the year 1850, which is quite remarkable given the history of the camera in the great city of Vienna.
