Christopher Bass is a Retired Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

In this in-depth lecture, psychiatrist Dr Christopher Bass explores the complex medicolegal aspects of malingering, functional neurological disorder (FND), chronic pain syndromes, and factitious disorder, drawing from his extensive experience in neuropsychiatry and forensic psychiatry. This talk addresses the challenges of psychiatric assessment in legal contexts, including symptom exaggeration, diagnosis threat, and the role of iatrogenic and sociocultural factors in shaping patient presentations. The talk discusses diagnostic pitfalls, the spectrum between genuine and non-credible symptom presentation, and the importance of a thorough, multidisciplinary approach. Through real-life case examples—covering CRPS, functional blindness, mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), and fraudulent personal injury claims—he illustrates how psychiatric symptoms intersect with legal standards such as “fundamental dishonesty.”
