A refraction test is a painless eye exam to determine the prescription for glasses or contact lenses by measuring how the eye focuses light. The test involves looking through a phoropter, a device with different lenses, at an eye chart, while the eye doctor asks which view is clearer. An automatic refraction can also be performed by a machine that shines light into the eye to measure its focusing power without patient input.
What to expect during the test
Objective and subjective refraction: The test can be objective or subjective. An objective refraction uses a machine like a retinoscope to measure the eye's focusing power without your input. A subjective refraction requires you to answer questions to find the best lens power.
Subjective assessment: An eye doctor will place a device called a phoropter in front of you, with different lenses that are moved into place. You'll be asked to look at an eye chart and state whether the view is clearer with certain lenses, and which one is better.
Phoropter and eye chart: You will sit in a chair and look through the phoropter at an eye chart about 20 feet away. The test is performed one eye at a time.
Automatic refraction: A machine will shine a light into your eyes and automatically calculate the refraction, a process that does not require your responses.
Pediatric refraction: For children, the process may involve a computerized test, a light reflex test, or using a phoropter. The doctor may also use eye drops to relax the focusing muscles, a technique called cycloplegic refraction.
