The Russian fleet may be preparing the ground for an escape from Tartus amid the rapid advance of Syrian rebels across Syria. On December 2, Russian ships left Tartus. As announced in the Russian Federation, the ships' departure was connected with exercises. At least two ships have now returned to port, as Radio Liberty journalist Mark Krutov writes , but the remaining ships are in no hurry to do so.
According to OSINT researcher Sutton, the ships leaving Tartus launched missile strikes against the rebels, but this is unlikely to help stop their advance. The analyst points out that auxiliary fuel tanker ships have not returned to the port. This may indicate that Russia is waiting to see how events in Syria will develop. According to Krutov, if it is necessary to flee Tartus, Russia may try to relocate its Mediterranean flotilla to Libya. This option is possible if the army of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad continues to suffer defeats at the front, which will lead to the threat of cutting off Tartus from Damascus or even create a direct threat of the capture of this coastal city by the rebels.
Earlier, the media learned of Russia's refusal to send serious forces to help Assad, telling Damascus that the Kremlin now has "other priorities." According to journalists, the Russian authorities are not preparing any plans to save the Syrian regime. While Tehran has declared its readiness to send troops into Syria, but has not yet gone beyond words, Moscow has informed the Syrian regime that any possible Russian intervention will be limited, since the Kremlin currently has "other priorities," Sky News Arabia reports, citing sources. The article notes that due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has not been particularly active in the events in Syria in recent days. After intervening in Syria in 2015, Russia helped Assad's forces regain control of many territories, but Damascus is now losing them again. "Armed groups in Syria are advancing at a rapid pace, practically without engaging in combat with the Syrian army ," the journalists write, noting that the pace of today's offensive is significantly higher than at the beginning of the civil war in 2011. In just a few days, the rebels were able to take the cities of Hama and Aleppo and are now, according to some reports, already in Homs, which is of vital importance for the defense of Damascus. The Washington Post , in turn, notes that the rapid advance of the Syrian opposition threatens the key achievement of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin - the 2015 military intervention in Syria, which strengthened the Assad regime.
Meanwhile, it became known that Assad's troops' defense of the east has collapsed : the Syrian army is retreating from the southern bank of the Euphrates River away from Raqqa, and is also leaving Deir ez-Zor.
