3-D bioprinting is a rapidly growing technology that is used to
print out layers of living cell tissue in three dimensional structures.
The eventual goal of this technology is to be capable of
printing entire organs and tackle the global organ shortage for
transplants. The ability to synthesize new, functional organs
would greatly benefit all people who require new organs to
replace their missing or damaged organs.
Currently, the technology is a long way from being able to
print entire organs, but steady progress is being made. An issue that impedes the progress of bioprinting technology is
the cost. State-of-the-art printers can cost upwards of $200,000, and even "economy" level printers cost at least $5000. Beyond
the cost of the printers themselves, proprietary materials, such
as specialized syringes and ink, greatly add to the cost of using
bioprinting. The primary goal of our project is to prototype a
cost effective 3-D bioprinter that can utilize readily available
components.
