Extension of Dolma Hills of Eastern Ghat, Ajodhya Hills is spread over almost 500sq. km in Purulia district of West Bengal in India. Under Bagmundi Community Block and Police Station, the area is covered with hills and forest with some tribals like Tundra and Santhal settlements. Tropical climate makes it rich in flora and fauna. Sal, Segun, Palash, Kushum, Mahua, Neem, Kend, Arshwgandha, Satmuli, Bhringaraj, Haritaki, Amla, Bahera, Karanj, bamboo, etc make the habitat of Pangolin, Wolf, Leopard, Elephant, Madras treeshrew and many other species. Subarnarekha on its west and Kansabati on its North are the two rivers which carry all the water drained from the hills. There is a mythological importance of this place as well. It is believed that Lord Rama and Sita had a brief stay in this forest during their exile. Sita being thirsty, Lord Rama pierced the earth crust to bring out water to quench Sita’s thirst. Now the place has become famous in the name of Sita-Kunda in Ajodhya Hills. On Baishakhi Purnima the tribes drink this water before starting their hunting festival.
40 km from Purulia, 26km from Balarampur and 27km from Jhalda, Ajodhya Hills has become a well known tourist destination now a day. Apart from the thick forest through the undulating plateau, other attraction of these hills are 3 falls, 9 dams and few hill-top treks which are frequently visited by the tourists. Two full days are enough to cover the Hills completely. Moreover, rock climbing is often organised on these hills by various mountaineering clubs.
This all can be covered by conducted tour, by own/ hired vehicle or sometimes by motorbike too. A number of economy and mediocre hotels are available both at Bagmundi and Ajodhya Hill top.
Winter is the best time to plan for Ajodhya Hills; again, rainy season also adds a different flavour to its ambience. Moreover, March-April is the time for beautiful flowers, especially Palash, flaring through the hill slopes.
Its a good place for a weekend trip or a picnic tour or for a excursion trip.
