1st outbreak of serious, treatment-resistant C. auris fungus confirmed in Seattle

Washington state healthcare providers are dealing with the first known outbreak of the C. auris fungus, which can cause serious infections and even death.

C. auris is a fungus that can cause serious infections and can be resistant to treatment medications, according to the CDC.

It’s now been confirmed in four patients, with links to Kindred Hospital, on First Hill in Seattle, according to Public Health Seattle & King County.

The facility routinely screens all incoming patients for this fungus and notified the health department that a patient, admitted Jan. 10, tested positive for it.
