Loads of beginners and intermediate players are always asking what notes they should use to start improvising. In my opinion, the easiest and most efficient way to get into improvisation is through the minor pentatonic scale.

The minor pentatonic is a 5 note scale consisting of the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th notes of the natural minor scale. There are no 'avoid' notes so you can pretty much play any of those notes in any order and it will work.

You should alway play the scale in the minor key. So if a song was in a minor key you would play the minor pentatonic of that key. If the song was in a major key, you would have to work out the relative minor and play that minor pentatonic scale.

Start off slowly, just playing a few notes here and there and slowly build it up. Get to know the scale and try to come up with little riffs and licks.
