Synopsis:
Shubhra Ray, a dedicated worker of a Left-wing political party, is organising a strike in a factoryin order to extract better wages for its workers. The owners of the factory, in collusion with the leader of a Right-wing political party, are plotting to frustrate the strike. The morning on which the strikers are holding a meeting at the factory gate, the agent provocateurs of the owners start a skirmish. In the ensuing melee Shubhra, who has been addressing an assembly of the strikers, is shot dead.
Shubhra leaves behind a family consisting of his father, a pensioner, his mother, younger brother Rajat and sister Anjali. His death robs his family of the major source of their income and drives them almost to the brink of starvation and desperation. In the meantime, Rajat continues to apply for jobs and appear for interviews, but does not succeed in obtaining a position. He has been deeply affected by the death of his elder brother and thinks of taking revenge on the killers. His failure to procure a job, as well as his helplessness in the face of the grave injustice constantly done to the common people by the bourgeois social system, begins to embitter his sensitive nature. His girlfriend Reena, whom he love perhaps more deeply than he realises also becomes a helpless victim of the evil forces which dupe and exploit the common people in the name of democracy. Finally, Rajat, who had once fainted at the sight of a chicken having its throat slit, takes up a chopper to strike down the person who is to him a representative of the enemies of his class - the class of the have-nots all the world over.
Thus the chopper wielded by Rajat becomes the symbol of the ultimate struggle of the exploited against the exploiter - a struggle which can end only in the breaking of the shackles of oppression and bondage.
