Welcome to the Green Wasp Removal YouTube Channel. In this episode, we continue training and mentoring the Manchester University Wasp Survey Team, on July 12, 2024, as we go into intense battle with two very aggressive Baldfaced Hornet nests. These nests had to be removed from locations where they were dangerous to the property owners who called us for help, and so we collected them for Venom Immunotherapy (VIT).

As you’ll see in this footage of the team in action, it takes skill, steady nerves, a sharp mind, proper technique, and a cool headed approach to work safely in the field of professional wasp venom collection.

Collecting angry Baldfaced Hornets is quite an experience, similar to working with killer bees. There is no room for error in this work, and there is a lot to remember to perform the job safely and effectively.

Baldfaced Hornets often have intense defensive reactions to being disturbed. They will spray venom in our faces and eyes, and attempt to sting us repeatedly throughout the collection process. Strict safety protocols and training, and trust in our field equipment, are key to doing the job properly.

Baldfaced Hornets, or Dolichovespula maculata, are very beneficial native wasps that are helpful pollinators and excellent biological control agents in the local ecosystem because they hunt pest insects to feed to their young.

Though we call them hornets, they are in fact an important native species of Aerial Yellowjacket. These beneficial predators can wipe out thousands of pest insects each season so they should only be removed when they pose a significant sting risk to people, as they did here.

We'll show you the entire field collection process for both nests, and also the incubation process that allows us to raise the brood combs in captivity until their larvae hatches out as adult wasps that can be collected several times for Venom Immunotherapy.

We'll also show you how we humanely flash freeze the wasps in dry ice (frozen CO2) to preserve their venom for biomedical use.
