"Listen To Godly Counsel" (Proverbs 1:8-19) Pastor AJ Caparros June 16, 2024 Sunday Service

Today is Father’s Day. One of the ways children show their gratitude towards their father is through a gift. What do you think would be the best gift that children can give their dad? If you ask some dads, they are not looking for material things. They want is for their children to listen more. That’s also what our Heavenly Father wants from us, right? Our Heavenly Father simply wants His children to listen to Him and obey His wise counsel.

Listening is such an important skill to master, but isn’t it strange that we never had a class in school that taught us how to listen properly? We never had a subject or a course on listening when most of what we do in school is to sit down and supposedly listen. Most of us are bad listeners if we’re totally honest with ourselves. We often talk too much and rarely listen well. We all have one mouth and two ears, but often times, it seems like we two mouths and one ear. And that one ear we have seems to need a lot of cleaning.

Listening is not only about giving attention to the one who’s talking. It’s also about following instructions. The test of true listening is not when we parrot what was said to us. The test of true listening is when we follow the instructions laid out for us.

Today, we will study Proverbs 1:8-19, and we will look at two competing counselors. One counsel is from a godly parent. The other counsel is from a godless gang. Who will you listen to? It’s very important who we turn our ears to. It’s very important who we listen to. If we listen to the counsel of the godless, then we’ll just waste our lives. But if we listen to the counsel of the godly, then we’ll live in wisdom. Godless counsel leads to foolish living. Godly counsel leads to wise living. Do you want to be wise or do you want to be a fool?
