Human Rights in the Light of the Farewell Sermon (Khutbat ul-Wada)
Farewell Sermon: Final Sermon, Last Sermon, Khutbat ul-Wada
Introduction
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his final sermon on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, 10 A.H., in the Uranah Valley of Mount Arafat in Makkah. In this last sermon, he emphasized the fundamental principles of human rights in Islam. Below are some key aspects from the sermon:
1. Equality of All Humans
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reminded everyone that all humans are equal.
"Allah created you from a single pair of man and woman, and made you into nations and tribes. No Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, and no white person has superiority over a black person. All human beings are from Adam and Eve."
2. Right to Property Protection
The Prophet (PBUH) declared that the lives and properties of Muslims are sacred.
"This month, this day, and this city are sacred. So treat every life and property of a Muslim as a sacred trust."
3. Right to Life
He stressed the importance of not harming others.
"Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Your blood and your property are as sacred as this day and this month."
4. Rights of Women
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized that women have rights and should be treated with respect.
"You have rights regarding your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission."
5. Always Remember the Hereafter (Akhirah)
The Prophet (PBUH) reminded the people of the Day of Judgment.
"Remember, you will meet Allah, and He will indeed calculate your deeds."
6. Justice
He called for fairness and warned against injustice.
"Do not commit injustice, for one day you will meet Allah and answer for your deeds."
7. Prohibition of Usury (Interest)
He forbade the practice of charging interest.
"Allah has forbidden you from taking interest (riba)."
8. Beware of Satan (the Devil)
The Prophet (PBUH) cautioned the people to be vigilant against Satan.
"Satan has lost hope of leading you astray in major matters, so beware of him in smaller matters."
9. Fundamentals of Islam
He reinforced the pillars of Islam.
"Fast, give zakat, perform Hajj, offer salah, and believe in the oneness of Allah (shahada)."
10. Brotherhood
He emphasized the unity and brotherhood among Muslims.
"Every Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim."
11. Freedom of Religion
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reaffirmed the right to religious freedom.
"Everyone has the right to choose their own religion without compulsion."
12. Rights of Slaves and Kind Treatment
He urged kind treatment towards slaves.
"Feed your slaves the same food you eat, and clothe them with what you wear."
13. The Last Prophet
He declared that there would be no prophet after him.
"O people, no prophet or apostle will come after me. I leave behind two things—the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Follow them, and you will never go astray."
14. Preaching the Message
The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged the listeners to spread his message.
"All those who listen to me should pass on my words to others, and those to others again. It may be that the last ones will understand my words better than those who heard me directly."
Conclusion
Human Rights
all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Every person has the right to freedom, regardless of nationality, religion, gender, color, language, or any other status. These rights are universal and include the right to life, liberty, security, freedom of thought, equality, education, and more.
Human Rights in Islam
In Islam, human rights are the basic rights and freedoms granted to all people by Allah. These rights come from the Qur'an, Hadith, and Islamic legal principles. They include the right to life, freedom of belief and worship, equality before the law, protection, privacy, education, and social welfare.
