Afghanistan Defence ministry said a number of fighters had entered the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital.

An eyewitness saw one of the gunmen, dressed in a white doctor's coat, take out a concealed AK-47 and open fire, killing at least one patient and one hospital worker.

The incident reportedly took place in the vicinity of Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan area, which is very close to the US Embassy.

One official said that a "security incident" had been reported at the hospital.

No terrorist group has yet claimed responsibility behind the incident.

A gunman dressed as a doctor, and his accomplices, opened fire at a military hospital in close proximity to the United States Embassy in Kabul on Wednesday, engaging security forces in the premises of the establishment. An explosion was also reported.
