This is a story reconstructed from fragments. From water-stained documents stored in a basement in Pennsylvania. From a diary kept by a schoolteacher who never married. From the silence of a woman who lived forty-three years after that November night and never once explained what she saw.
Thomas Whitmore was thirty-one years old in the autumn of 1897. He worked as a surveyor for the Pennsylvania Railroad, mapping routes through the Allegheny foothills. His hands were calloused, his back strong, his reputation unremarkable. He lived in a two-room house on the eastern edge of Bellwood, a town small enough that everyone knew when someone's chimney needed repair, but large enough that a man could still disappear into his own thoughts.
