Dozens of canine competitors took part in the 20th annual Surf-A-Thon in San Diego on Sunday, raising funds for orphaned pets cared for by the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Jennifer Gercke, the centre’s communications director, said it is the world’s longest-running surf dog event and the only one where 100% of proceeds support orphaned pets and the centre’s programmes.

She added that everyone on the sand was not only having a wonderful time but also helping to save lives.

The event was held at Del Mar Dog Beach, with competitors including James Wall, who caught waves with his friend Faith, rescued as a puppy from a car park. The pair won last year’s competition and have been taking part for 13 years.
