Angiography is a type of X-ray imaging that allows doctors to visualize blood vessels, particularly arteries and veins, in detail. It's used to diagnose conditions like blockages or narrowed areas (stenosis) in blood vessels.

How does angiography work?
Contrast Agent: A special dye (contrast agent) is injected into the bloodstream.
X-ray: X-rays are taken as the dye travels through the blood vessels, creating images (angiograms) that highlight their path.
Visualization: The angiogram allows doctors to see the structure of blood vessels and identify any abnormalities.

What is angiography used for?

1. Diagnosing heart conditions:
Angiography is frequently used to diagnose coronary artery disease, such as blockages in the coronary arteries.
2. Evaluating other vascular problems:
It can also be used to assess blood vessels in the brain, limbs, and other parts of the body.

Procedure:
Catheter Insertion: A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel (usually in the groin or arm).
Guidance: The catheter is guided to the area being examined using X-ray images.
Contrast Injection: The contrast agent is injected through the catheter, and X-rays are taken.
Image Analysis: The resulting angiogram images are analyzed by doctors to identify any abnormalities.

What are potential risks of angiography?

Allergic Reaction: Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the contrast dye.
Bruising/Bleeding: Bruising or bleeding at the insertion site of the catheter is possible.
Infection: There's a small risk of infection at the insertion site.
Kidney Issues: In some cases, the contrast dye can affect kidney function.

Safety:
Angiography is generally considered a safe procedure, and serious complications are rare. The NHS website states that the procedure is only performed if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
