학명은 Ardea cinerea이다. 왜가리는 우리나라의 백로과 조류 중에서 제일 큰 종으로 우리나라의 아종은 중국 동부, 몽고 및 일본 등지와 인도차이나반도, 미얀마까지 분포하고 있다. 사할린·쿠릴열도·타이완 등지에서도 기록되었다.
머리에서 목까지는 백색이고, 이마의 양쪽에서 눈 위를 지나 윗머리까지는 검은 띠가 있으며, 뒷머리의 깃털은 우관(羽冠) 모양을 이룬다. 등에서 위꼬리 덮깃까지는 청회색이다. 어깨깃은 뻗어서 장식깃이 되었으며 연한 회색이나 날개의 덮깃은 대부분 청회색이다. 첫째날개덮깃은 검지만 일부분은 백색이다. 날개깃은 대부분 검지만 셋째날개깃과 그것에 가까운 둘째날개깃은 회색이다.
목의 앞옆 중앙에는 2, 3가닥의 검은 세로줄이 있으며 목의 하단 깃털은 길게 늘어져 장식깃을 이룬다. 가슴옆과 배는 검으며 하면은 백색이다. 부리는 황갈색, 눈앞 나출부는 황색, 다리는 녹갈색이다.
논·습초지·하천·하구·해안·간석지 등지에서 개구리, 물고기, 작은 포유류와 뱀 등을 잡아먹는다. 높은 나뭇가지에 둥지를 틀고 한배에 3∼5개의 알을 낳는다. 암수 함께 25∼28일간 포란하고, 50∼55일간 육추(育雛: 새끼를 기름)하면 둥지를 떠난다.
우리나라에서는 전역에 걸쳐 번식하는 흔한 여름새이다. 일부의 적은 무리는 남쪽지방과 도서지방에서 월동하는 텃새이다. 번식은 대개 집단을 이루어 백조류(주로 중대백로)와 함께 군집번식을 하나 왜가리만의 집단번식지도 드물지 않다.
근년에 와서는 농약과 공장폐수 등으로 오염된 먹이를 먹고 적지 않은 피해를 입고 있어 점차 그 수가 줄어들고 있는 경향이다. 따라서 정부에서는 대표적인 백로 및 왜가리 번식지를 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

Both males and females incubate the eggs for 25 to 28 days, and after 50 to 55 days of brooding, they leave the nest.
They are a common summer bird, breeding throughout Korea. Small flocks winter in southern regions and islands, making them resident birds. They usually breed in groups, often with swans (mainly the great egret), but heron breeding colonies are also not uncommon.
In recent years, their numbers have been declining due to significant damage caused by eating food contaminated with pesticides and industrial wastewater. Consequently, the government has designated key breeding sites for herons and herons as natural monuments for their protection.
