Coordinated by Equality Forum since 2006, LGBT History Month celebrates the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Icons each October. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community, and makes a civil rights statement about our extraordinary national and international contributions. This year, South Florida’s trusted queer magazine HOTSpots Magazine is honoring the women of LGBTQ+ history in its new issue, which is on stands now. A few of our queer women covered in this issue are Marin Alsop, the first female conductor to lead a major orchestra in the United States, Britain, Austria, and South America; Madeline Davis, an American LGBTQ+ activist and a founding member of the Mattachine Society of the Niagara Frontier, the first gay rights organization in Western New York; Elana Dykewomon whose debut novel was the first to be identified as a “lesbian book” by The New York Times; Roxane Gay, Brittney Griner, Tessa Ganserer, and more.
