Testing 3 Rocket Fuel Configurations | Black Powder vs Sulfur-less vs Candle Wax Propellant

In this video, I tested three different types of homemade rocket fuel to see how each performs in a small-scale solid rocket motor setup. These included:

Standard black powder using an end-burning grain configuration

Sulfur-less black powder

Candle wax-based propellant (also known as paraffin rocket fuel)


While I’m experienced with traditional black powder rocket propellants, the candle wax rocket fuel was a new experiment. Due to my unfamiliarity with its ignition characteristics and combustion behavior, it didn’t work properly during testing. The black powder and sulfur-less black powder motors also failed to perform well — they were too powerful for the current rocket motor design, leading to unstable thrust and structural issues.

This experiment is part of my ongoing journey in amateur rocketry, where I explore different rocket propellant formulations, rocket motor construction, and propellant chemistry. My goal is to create more efficient and reliable model rocket engines through real-world testing and analysis of rocket motor failures.
