'Scrounging' to survive? Charity evidence exposes The Benefit Paradox.

It is becoming ever clearer that benefit claimants feel imprisoned within the borders of their own country, tarnished as criminals and forced into further poverty. Paranoia has been plastered on the walls of London asking us to "blow the whistle on benefit cheats", as if such theft is being initiated from every claimant household.

Now that statistics are out on the tiny percentage of benefit cheats, the arrow of blame has taken another route to the same target. Certain media items have portrayed claimants as 'scroungers' who are living a life of luxury and glued to their home cinemas.
Action Week 2013 urged faith communities and charities to raise the alarm for the stigmatisation that has crept into public opinion as a result of such fabrications. Many related campaigns sprouted quickly, but the mission to pull the wool from the eyes of those invested in the claimant stereotype is a complicated one.

Through the MyStory campaign that launched in Action week, Housing Justice have rapidly gained evidence to begin exposing the injustice of the skiver rhetoric used to target the most vulnerable. In just a couple of weeks, many claimants have uploaded their stories of poverty and suffering to www.tellmystory.org.uk.

This campaign is already receiving some media interest, but it requires a collective input in order to reach the wider public.
