Piloting Income Generating Activities (PIGA).

In December 2019, a pneumonia outbreak that started in Wuhan, China had spread rapidly to the entire world. The World Health Organization declared it a “Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19)” pandemic on March 11, 2020. As a precaution, the government of Uganda initiated a lockdown and recommended all people across Uganda to stay home in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

This greatly affected the country’s economy when several businesses closed, leaving people especially in the villages, out of jobs with little to no sources of income or livelihood, which created panic and tension in communities as they searched for all possible means of survival. With schools closed, cases of #childlabour increased as some children were responsible to support their families.

According to the UNICEF and ILO data provided in 2021, Over the past four years, the incidence of children in hazardous labour increased by 6.5 million in Africa. The ratio of children in #childlabour in agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa stands at 4 in every 5 children. In Uganda, Estimates from the national household survey of 2016/17 revealed that 2,048,000 children out of the 8,973,000 aged 5-17 were engaged in some form of #childlabour, representing 14% of all children in Uganda. With the impact of COVID - 19, these numbers increased.

As a response to this problem, Nascent Research and Development Organization entered into an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in support of the MDF-funded project, known as ‘Supporting Governments in addressing child labor for sustainable agricultural transformation in COVID-19 economic recovery’.
