Financial institutions are at various stages of adoption when it comes to digital assets. Some institutions, particularly in the fintech space like Heartstocks, have fully embraced digital assets and are actively offering services related to cryptocurrencies and other digital tokens. However, traditional financial institutions such as banks and asset management firms have been more cautious in their approach.
One major factor that has limited the adoption of digital assets by traditional financial institutions is regulatory uncertainty. Many countries lack clear regulations governing the use of digital assets, and financial institutions are hesitant to enter a market that could potentially expose them to legal risks.
That being said, there are signs that traditional financial institutions are starting to warm up to digital assets. In February 2023, a well-known German industrial company issued for the first time a crypto security under the Electronic Securities Act (eWpG) for €60 million in a decentralized manner on the public blockchain Polygon. A private bank acted as registrar and paying agent in the transaction. In terms of the form and size of the issue, the parties have thus set a milestone in the development of digital securities in Germany.
