Why should scientists use art to communicate their research? How do scientists balance producing art and research? How can you build a career as a science-artist?

In this webinar, science-artists Larissa van der Laan and Natalia Jagielska explore the science-art interface, and give their perspective on scientists and artists can engage one another to communicate science and build their careers. The webinar will focus on the why and how scientists should collaborate with artists, how scientists can make the move from research into science-art, and how science-artists can grow their portfolio working with scientists.

The webinar will last one hour, with 40 minutes for presentations and 20 minutes for audience Q&A.

The speakers:

Larissa van der Laan is a PhD Student at the Leibniz University Hannover, Germany and artist, aiming to communicate climate science (among other things) through art. Her research is within the project GLISSADE, focusing on glacier mass balance modelling on seasonal and decadal scales, using the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM).

Natalia Jagielska is a doctoral student at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in palaeontology with a focus on the evolution of Jurassic Pterosaurs. Natalia, in addition to academic studies, ventures into art; drawing children’s books, storyboarding and illustrating posters for film festivals. Her artistic background compliments research, especially in creating engaging figures, presentations and accessible scientific outreach.
