Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. He was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching knifemaking classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019.
The large 10-1/2 inch blade is forged from Stuart's own damascus, combining 75Ni8 and 1080 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and durability. The high contrast pattern is easy to see, even from a distance. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. The top clip stops just short of being fully sharpened. Stuart's touchmark is on the right side ricasso. His J.S. mark is on the left side. Because the knife is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade from rust.
The handle is presentation grade Hawaiian curly koa. Koa (Acacia koa) is a beautiful exotic wood that only grows on the Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the most desirable woods in the world. Stuart hand sculpted rings into the front and back of the handle which locks your hand in and creates a non-slip grip. The forged S-guard, spacer, and end cap combine fireblacked and high polished embellishments. This knife has an excellent sense of balance and feels great in your hand.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand tooled leather custom sheath made by Stuart's wife Michelle is included.
