Between 1959 and 1967, the US Navy commissioned forty-one submarines capable of carrying Polaris nuclear missiles and launching them while submerged. These submarines were remarkable pieces of engineering, made possible by the recent development of nuclear propulsion and inertial navigation. In this video, I explain the history of these submarines and place them in the context of Cold War history of technology.

This video is based heavily on a book called Nuclear Navy, by Richard G. Hewlett and Francis Duncan (Chicago, 1974). I highly recommend this fascinating book for anyone who wants to get an in-depth understanding of the naval nuclear propulsion program and nuclear power in general. This is literally one of my favorite books that I have read in the past couple of years.
