The emblematic event of the Szombathely summer, the Savaria Carnival, revived in the year of the millennium, invites guests looking for sophisticated summer entertainment to the city for the 22nd time this year. On the last weekend of August - from 24 to 27 - the Roman city centre will be the setting for a revival of the past, with a new look at the many corners of the city. The 2,000-year-old city will be dressed up in festive costumes, offering a colourful and rich programme of educational and entertaining activities.
The Savaria Historical Carnival is a unique event in the country and the largest "meeting place" for military traditionalists in the country. Legionary troops evoking Roman warfare and military life, fearless gladiators who spared no bodily harm, early and late medieval knights who fought with their weapons, and Hungarian traditionalists who evoked the lifestyle and warfare of our ancestors, all under the banner of educational entertainment and authenticity.
The most spectacular and unique event of the carnival is the parade of traditionalists and showmen on Friday and Saturday evenings, when nearly 1,000 costumed performers parade through the streets of the city centre, adding spectacular performances to the waiting.
