How did the Eastern Romans Trade with China?

Before the fall of the Western Roman Empire, trade between the East, especially China, and Rome, had already begun and gone quite well. Thanks to the Silk Road, the two far-away nations were able to import and export different spices, incense, livestock, grains, leather, and other materials - with possibly the most popular import into Rome from China being silk. And Silk was unquestionably in high demand within the Roman Empire, despite the frustrating trade imbalance that some of the later emperors attempted to resolve. So when the Byzantines succeeded the Western wing of the empire, they also inherited this trade relationship and silk obsession.
