COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS MOVING LEARNING OUTSIDE
Meeting #39 — November 9, 2021
Presentation given by The Lawrence Hall of Science at University of California, Berkeley — Berkeley, California


Since June 2020, the National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative has been hosting a free, online, public discussion forum for educators and administrators from schools, school districts, and county and state education departments around the country. Participants in this forum gather to share information with one another as they create outdoor learning programs to implement during the pandemic and beyond. Our goal is to provide support and to build a collegial “community of practice” and national network that strengthens the field. Interested members of the public from anywhere in the world are also welcome to join us at our meetings. (https://www.greenschoolyards.org/comm...)

In 2020 and 2021, our ongoing conversation in this Community of Practice has focused on addressing the pandemic, but we also recognize the long-term value of outdoor learning and green schoolyards, and believe that investments made now will enrich education and improve the well-being of children and the environment for years to come. Over time, the focus of our discussions will shift to topics related to long-term green schoolyard planning, implementation, and management.

During Meeting #39, on November 9, 2021, our guest speakers were Vanessa Lujan and Sarah Pedemonte from The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. They shared a resource created by The Lawrence Hall of Science that contains sample menus of outdoor learning strategies to address districts' longer-term vision and goals for equitable, engaging teaching and learning. The Lawrence Hall of Science is a co-founder of the National COVID-19 Outdoor Learning Initiative.

Green Schoolyards America collaborates with school districts and public agencies to create Living Schoolyard Initiatives that transform asphalt-covered school grounds into park-like green spaces that improve children’s well-being, learning, and play while contributing to the ecological health and climate resilience of our cities. We are working to change the norm for school ground design, use, and management so that all children will have access to the natural world in the places they already visit on a daily basis.

Our programs support the living school ground movement, build relationships that help it succeed, and work to embed this perspective in our existing institutions and policy and regulatory frameworks.
