Iany Gayo - Michelangelo Foundation 2019 Summer School Programme

The Michelangelo Foundation’s inaugural Summer School Programme allows young students to broaden their horizons by studying craftsmanship across Europe. One of the students who participated in the Summer School course in Lisbon, Iany Gayo, grew up in Mozambique and is currently studying architecture in Lisbon where she draws inspirations from the narrow, steep and cobblestoned streets of the city’s colourful Alfama district. During our 2.5-week basketry workshop held this summer in Lisbon’s Popular Art Museum (MAP) she learnt five traditional Portuguese basket weaving methods that hail from different regions of the country and are on the verge of extinction. Along with the other students on the course, Iany co-created a series of woven pieces that were shown in an exhibition called ‘Um Cento de Cestos’ (A hundred baskets) held in MAP in September. “For me the future of craftsmanship is to have it very present in our daily lives,” she says. “It’s about having things around you that last a very long time.”

This intensive course is developed in partnership with the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and Fundação Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva and organised by the Museu de Arte Popular/Museu Nacional de Etnologia, Passa Ao Futuro and The Home Project Design Studio
