Why do all the white pines in Vermont look brown right now? There are two reasons — white pine needlecast, caused by our historically wet year in 2023 (needlecast is a couple different fungi, so thrive in wet conditions) causing needles to brown and drop prematurely — AND a very heavy “flowering” year. White pine “flowers” are tannish brown, and the trees are loaded with them, causing the foliage to appear even more brown. It takes two years to make a pine cone, so this also tells us that we’re likely to have a heavy cone year in 2025. #forests #ecology #nature #forestry #plants #forester #vermont
