Life saving equipment such as defibrillators and life buoys or rings are routinely damaged or stolen in Ireland. This puts lives in danger unnecessarily.

Over Christmas many will remember an incident in Arklow Co. Wicklow where a group of thugs stole and destroyed a defibrillator from the middle of the town. They were captured on CCTV thankfully, but the current penalties (if any) for the theft or destruction of such life saving equipment, are too lenient.

To introduce stiffer penalties and to act as a deterrent, I’ve drafted the Life Saving Equipment Bill 2017 which would introduce a new offence in relation to the theft or damage of life saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys. Last year for example Cork City Council had to replace 300 lifebuoys in the city. People need to know that there is a serious fine and a custodial sentence for such behaviour.
