Tiffany Thomas (tiffany.a.thomas) labels herself, tongue-in-cheek, an "elite Masters racer" on the road and in cyclo-cross, and while we talk about sporting accomplishments in this first part of our conversation we mostly focus on her way into the sport and questions of inclusion for transgender cyclists. Tiffany grew up in California and came into cycling through Peloton for fitness reasons, quickly discovering both the benefits of the community that a sport like cycling can offer while also quickly discovering it as an outlet for her competitive side. Tiffany is an Assistant Professor in the department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University and the director of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Biochemical Genetics Laboratory so it's probably not surprising to find her to be ambitious and methodical about her training as a cyclist: the importance of nutrition, season planning, energy systems, coaches, race selection, and more feature in our conversation and Tiffany shares her views on the need for increasing opportunities and improving development for (young) bike riders in the NYC metro area. Our conversation also takes us to the topic of her experience riding and racing as a transgender cyclist. Tiffany has gotten blurred out of podium pictures and made felt like she doesn't belong by some, but she has also very much been welcomed and included by others. So naturally, we talk about inclusion for transgender athletes and what other racers and race organizers can do to to truly welcome everybody.
