After our visit to the rock physics & rock mechanics lab , we were given an assignment for our Seismic Methods course to determine the elastic properties of rock using Body waves (P-waves, S-waves).

We were given three rock specimens to experiment on. They were Granite, Marble and Sandstone. By utilizing the OYO Sonic Viewer machine, we were able to determine the P-wave and S-wave velocities.

The data gathered from our experiments was recorded and the values were used to determine the Young’s Modulus (E), Poisson’s Ratio (μ), Bulk Modulus (K) and Rigidity Modulus (G) for the THREE rock specimens.

some details:
it is important to calibrate the equipments before using them to ensure precision and be less prone to error.
petroleum jelly was added to the upper and lower sideof the specimens as only p-waves can pass through liquids. by doing this we were able to isolate p-waves from s-waves.
