Nixon's Grog Cocktail Tutorial by bartender & mixologist Garret Richard Inside the Desert Oasis Room

On this episode we welcome Garret Richard, craft cocktail bartender and mixologist, who shares with us a few tips for making better cocktails and takes us through making one of his own signature cocktails, the Nixon's Grog, right here inside the Desert Oasis Room!

This drink was inspired by bartender David Chan who served Nixon exclusively at the Trader Vic’s in Washington DC. Nixon’s favorite cocktail was a Trader Vic’s Navy Grog!

Nixon's Grog
5 drops saline
3 dashes Angostura
1 tsp St. Elizabeth allspice dram
1 oz acid adjusted grapefruit*
¾ oz grog syrup**
¾ oz Hamilton 86
¾ oz Appleton 12 yr
¾ oz Barbancourt White
-flash blend with 8 oz crushed ice
-pour over 4 oz crushed ice into a rocks glass with the lime shell in it
-garnish with grapefruit

*Acid Adjusted Grapefruit
Per 100 ml of grapefruit juice
-add 2g citric acid powder
-stir to combine
-refrigerate

**Grog Syrup
355g Mexican Coke
298g white sugar
22g allspice
-crack the allspice into smaller pieces
-place the cracked allspice into a pan and lightly toast
-add the Mexican Coke then the white sugar
-bring mixture to a boil
-low heat to a simmer and cover for 15 minutes
-place contents of the pan in a container and let sit in the refrigerator for 12 hours
-strain allspice and bottle
