Jacaranda FM has been supporting the Heartbeat Projects on Nelson Mandela Day for the past few year. The project runs programmes in different areas affected by poverty and focuses on children, who have lost one or both their parents in seven provinces. Heartbeat was founded in 2000 by Professor Sunette Steyn in response to the massive orphan challenges found in South Africa. According to a research paper by the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) (March 2011) on the state of the South African Family, a total of 3.95 million children had lost one or both parents by 2008, an increase of about a third since 2002. The Medical Research Council estimated in 2002 that “by 2015, some 5.7 million children would have lost one or both parents to AIDS.” To date Heartbeat has supported more than 55 000 orphans and vulnerable children, either through our direct community based interventions or by mentoring and training other community-based organisations on the Heartbeat model through the Tswelopele Training and Mentoring programme.



Heartbeat partners with communities, service providers, donors, the government and supporters to provide holistic care and services to our children. From a very young age, the children receive education, psychosocial, food, and basic care support and opportunities for their healthy and sustainable growth into adulthood. Our success to date can be ascribed to our extensive networks, our experience of over 12 years, our national footprint, our loyal donors and funders, our clear vision, our dedicated and passionate staff and our character as a nurturing and caring organisation.
