Turkey has once again demonstrated rapid progress in its defense technology development by converting its standard MK-84 gravity bombs into high-precision, smart guided munitions that can be launched from F-16 fighter jets. This transformation is a clear demonstration of the Turkish defense industry's ability to modernize conventional weaponry into advanced, efficient, accurate, and highly destructive weapons systems.

The MK-84 itself is a conventional aerial bomb weighing approximately 2,000 pounds that has long been used by many air forces worldwide. This bomb is known for its high explosive power, but the standard version suffers from limited accuracy due to its reliance solely on gravity. Recognizing the challenges of the modern battlefield, which demand high precision and minimal collateral damage, Turkey has developed an innovative solution in the form of a smart guidance kit.

Through national defense companies such as ASELSAN and TÜBİTAK SAGE, the MK-84 bombs are being modified using advanced guidance kits, one of which is known as the KGK-84, or winged guidance kit. This kit transforms the MK-84 into a smart bomb with high-precision navigation capabilities, allowing for accurate target engagement from long ranges.

Advanced Guidance System Technology
The main sophistication of the smart version of the MK-84 lies in its guidance system. Generally, this bomb is equipped with a combination of an inertial navigation system and a Global Positioning System. The INS system allows the bomb to maintain its position and direction even if external signals are disrupted, while the GPS provides high accuracy based on pre-programmed target coordinates.

Wing Kit and Increased Range
One of the most significant improvements to the smart MK-84 is the addition of a folding wing kit. This kit allows the bomb to glide long distances after being released from the aircraft, thus extending its attack range compared to conventional bombs.
