Madrid, is the capital and most populated city in Spain, which has been experiencing ever increasing heatwaves, and is having to rapidly adapt to these climate pressures. Since cities around the world consume two-thirds of the global energy supply and generate three-quarters of the world's greenhouse emissions, its essential that cities are actively upgrading their infrastructure to become more green. Madrid has become a leader in green infrastructure ranking 6th in the European Union. This is a major achievement considering Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union with 3.4 million inhabitants and up to 6.7 million people within its metropolitan area.

Interestingly Madrid lies almost exactly at the geographical heart of the Iberian Peninsula, its a strategic location for the political and financial center of the country because it considered somewhat neutral, since Spain is made of 17 Autonomous regions, each having different cultural practices and even languages. Cities across Spain are well connected to Madrid through an extensive network of bullet trains called AVE, with 3,100km of track which is the longest high-speed rail network in Europe, connecting the most populated cities around the country to Madrid.

Its Madrid's accessibility and high-tech infrastructure juxtaposed with its historical buildings which make it an attractive destination for tourists. Before 2020 a whopping 7.6 million people visited Madrid each year, since 2020 numbers have dropped significantly at approximately 2.2 million. Many Tourists like to visit Spain for the warm climate but Madrid's climate is fairly extreme from cold, crisp and windy winters to very hot dry summers, this is because the city sits at an elevation of some (646 metres) or 2,120 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest capitals in Europe.

The summer months of July and August are extremely oppressive and this year was no except, with the highest officicial recorded temperature taken at 40.7c on the 14th July 2022 but in some cases it can feel like 45c due to the urban heat island effect from the concrete and tarmac radiating the suns heat.

Over the last decades Madrid has been turning this around by pouring its resources into green infrastructure to become better climate adapted. In this video we will show you how Madrid removed a highway to install its most ambitious green project called the Madrid Rio which encompasses 47 different projects with a total cost of 280 million euros improving the lives for millions of people, by planting well over 9,000 trees, creating 30km of cycle paths and multiple recreational spaces.
