Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer whose music shaped the Baroque era and continues to inspire musicians today. Though he wrote extensively for organ, harpsichord, voices, and instruments of all kinds, his works have also been widely arranged for piano, revealing new dimensions of his genius.
Born in Eisenach, Germany, J.S. Bach came from a large family of musicians and was deeply rooted in Lutheran traditions. During his lifetime, he was admired primarily as an organist, keyboard virtuoso, and expert in organ building, but his enduring legacy rests on his extraordinary compositions.
He served in various musical posts across Germany, including Weimar, Köthen, and Leipzig, where he spent the last 27 years of his life as cantor of the Thomasschule and director of music in the city’s churches. His vast output includes sacred cantatas, masses, passions, orchestral suites, concertos, and keyboard works.
