A #Florida marine biologist and his musician business partner have been on a 15-year mission to raise awareness about dying coral reefs with a company that presents the issue through science and art, including livestreams of undersea coral, video images set to music projected on buildings and a psychedelic line of coral-themed clothing.

Over the past two years, amid coronavirus pandemic lockdowns and disruptions, one of Coral Morphologic's most popular features has been a livestream from an underwater camera in Miami's Government Cut where giant cruise ships and many other vessels pass daily.

Colin Foord, who runs Coral Morphologic with J.D. McKay, said the Coral City Camera recently passed 2 million views and usually has about 100 viewers online at any given time each day.

It's a window into an underwater world few people ever see, and it proves that staghorn and other corals can thrive there in addition to 177 species of fish, dolphins, manatees and other sea life.

A major climate conference led by the Aspen Institute this week in Miami Beach will feature nightly showings on the New World Center Wallscape of the Coral Morphologic film, "Coral City Flourotour," and Foord is speaking on a panel about how the ocean's natural systems can help humans learn to combat impacts of climate change.

Coral reefs are under assault from climate change.

The warming oceans prompt coral bleaching and raise the risk of infectious diseases that can cause mass die-offs in coral, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Stronger storms, changes in water chemistry and altered water currents also harm their habitats.

The staghorn, elkhorn and brain corals living in Government Cut provide a real-world example of how coral communities can adapt to such things as rising heat and polluted runoff, even in such an unlikely urban setting next to the the bustling Port of Miami.

Then there are the clothes. Coral Morphologic sells a line of surf and swimwear that take their designs from flower anemones and brain corals and are made in an environmentally sustainable way, such as using a type of nylon recycled from old fishing nets.
