According to a legend narrated in the Malay Annals, the prince of Srivijaya, Sang Nila Utama, who landed in 1299 after a terrible storm in the island of Temasek (literally: "city of the sea"), came across a lion - a fact considered auspicious - and founded the Kingdom of Singapura, which in Sanskrit literally means "city of the lion".
