At night, Gordon and Henry laugh in the shed about Thomas' mishap with the coaches, having heard about it from the stationmaster. Although he is not entirely successful, Thomas tries to get his own back by explaining his long-lost ability to pull trucks in the earliest days of the railway, back when it was just him and Edward running the line and before Sir Topham Hatt brought Henry, Gordon, and James (in that order, according to Thomas) to Sodor. As the other engines go to sleep, Thomas remains awake, getting lost in thought about his current situation.

Later that night, Edward returns to the shed from night work, and Thomas tells him that he misses pulling trains. Feeling sorry for Thomas, Edward proposes that the two of them should switch jobs the next day. Thomas happily agrees, but Edward warns him about the nature of the trucks and to wait until they check with Sir Topham Hatt first, and Thomas says he will. The next morning, however, Edward wakes up to Sir Topham Hatt yelling at him and asking where Thomas is, realizing at that moment that Thomas had left the shed.

Thomas arrives at the yards and collects Edward's train. He is very aggressive with the trucks, bumping them every time they insult him. This angers the trucks, who vow to pay Thomas out for mistreating them. Thomas puffs along the line with the train, enjoying himself immensely. Meanwhile, Edward and Sir Topham Hatt arrive at the yard too late to catch Thomas. Sir Topham Hatt tells Edward that he will have a talk with both engines when he gets back after finding Thomas. Back on the main line, Thomas reaches Gordon's hill. From this point, the trucks carry out their plan, starting with holding Thomas back to make the ascent difficult. As soon as Thomas reaches the top, the trucks immediately do the opposite, pushing him down the hill and making him a runaway. Eventually, Thomas is diverted into a siding at the next station, where he finally comes to a stop.

Thomas starts to furiously berate the trucks for their antics, but he is cut short when he sees Sir Topham Hatt waiting for him. Sir Topham Hatt interrogates Thomas about why he left the shed before he checked with him if it was okay to take Edward's train. But when Thomas finally explains his desire to pull trains again like he and Edward used to do, Sir Topham Hatt lets Thomas know that he knows his full potential. Sir Topham Hatt tells Thomas to spend the next few weeks training with Edward so he will be more experienced with trucks and closer to becoming a really useful engine.
